Why Bushcraft?
Throughout the vast majority of human history, we have been communal hunter-gatherers, intrinsically linked to our environment. Evolution has imbued humans with a predisposition to teamwork — a trait that has ensured our survival and development.
Bushcraft is the modern expression of this heritage — a celebration of collaboration, planning, and communication. Activities become seamless team-building exercises, unlocking natural cooperation in ways that feel both effortless and empowering.
It’s more than firelighting and marshmallows. Bushcraft covers science (e.g. combustion, ecosystems), geography (e.g. orienteering, landscapes), history (e.g. ancestral living), and even maths (e.g. structure, measurement, and ratios).
This subject is a treasure hunt of skills and insights — a way to thrive in nature while unlocking critical thinking and independence.
Connecting with the Curriculum
At AdventureNess, we explore Bushcraft from its roots, busting myths and reframing it as a vital, vibrant educational tool. Sessions are thoughtfully crafted to complement classroom learning:
- Origins of Bushcraft: understanding early societies and innovation
- Contextual Learning: linking content to current studies
- Reflective Practice: how outdoor learning deepens retention
Our modular programmes are designed to be progressive, flexible, and inclusive of all age groups — from nursery through to S6.
